Every now and then I volunteer my time and my writing to TalentEgg.ca. They’re a career hub resource for new and current grads seeking guidance on the real world after school. They have a content partnership with Toronto’s newest commuter mag, TONight Newspaper. I’d never really heard of the paper–or seen it for that matter–but a friend alerted me that an article I had written for TalentEgg was featured in Tuesday night’s edition! Sweet!

Cassandra from TalentEgg was kind enough to scan me the feature. Click the photo to enlarge.

I look sad because I had waited all day for this photo and the camera was about to die.

I look sad because I had waited all day for this photo and the camera was about to die.

Hemingway is probably one of my all time favourite authors, and this blog I stumbled across today sums up why:

His writing has been described as sparse, but I think efficient is a better word. He managed to convey in his short declarative sentences the emotion, the feeling, the very sense of the place he was writing about. More than any other writer, he gave me a feeling that I knew the place he was writing about. Be it Spain, Africa, Italy, France, or his beloved Florida Keys, he captured the essence of what those places must have been like to me.

True dat. When Elena and I were in Cuba, we decided to take a day trip to Havana. Part of the tour included stops where Hemingway hung out and wrote. I had never been so excited in my life.

The hotel where Hemingway wrote much of "For Whom the Bell Tolls".

Hemingway made Cuba feel like one of his novels—every single part of it. From the fisherman to the marketplaces, or the bars to the parties—the trip became one huge Hemingway novel.

"Floridita", a bar that Hemingway frequented.

My latest hot store column for Livedress.com was just published. It’s on the British fashion label, Fred Perry.

I really need to archive all these pieces online, in one place.

My upcoming article for Livedress.com will be on the iconic British label, Fred Perry. I had a chance to visit the store and really get to know the brand. I think I’ve fallen in love with them. The cuts, the colours and the different ensembles are amazing. I never liked Lacoste and can see why, Fred Perry trumps all. I wish I could buy the entire store!

TalentEgg.ca & Livedress.com; New Articles and an Update.

My second article, Recruiting 2.0: Social communities for resume building has been published over at TalentEgg.ca. This one is full of tips, and is pretty guidance counsellor heavy. Enjoy.

My first article with Livedress.com went live today. I did a profile on Queen St. jewellery boutique, EKO.

What’s also awesome this week is some news about the blog I started with Elena, Cheap ThrillCampus Intercept has agreed to publish an article nationally, once a month based around the idea of cheap thrills. They run a nationwide publication called Campus Life Magazine and it gets some pretty huge circulation. Although they’ve recently gone completely online, it’s still good news! First article should be up early May. I’ll also be doing a local Toronto article once a month. Thanks to Michelle for the tip off. We’re also going to be pitching a collaborative effort for the publication.

Am I a Writer?

I want to write books like her—not.

I’ve been filling up my plate as much I can these days. I really want my portfolio to be bursting at the seams. I figured that if I can volunteer my writing anywhere that will take me, it’ll give me good practice.

Work is going well, busy as always, but really well. I’ve started working on projects with more great people and it’s loads of fun. Big things also happening this coming week.

My second article with TalentEgg.ca should be up soon. I’ve contacted Campus Intercept—thanks Michelle—and I’m just waiting to hear back on when I can start writing. I’ve also been picked up by LiveDress.com; it’s a fashion site, and I’ll be writing profiles on independent boutiques around downtown Toronto. Most people have asked me why I’d write for an online fashion publication, but it’ll make it a challenge for me to have to write outside of my usual topics. It’s good practice.

Which brings me to my next question: Am I officially a writer? I mean, at work I write for a living. I’ll be writing for three publications soon, and LiveDress is giving me $9 an article. Yeah! $9! It’s better than nothing—I feel so bourgeoisie. Does all this make me a real writer? I don’t really know. I guess when other people start calling me a writer then I’ll feel like one. Whatever.
