Wednesday Plans – What Are Yours?

So Monday is now Complain Mondays and Tuesdays have become Random Tuesdays. Over a couple of drinks last night after work, which were totally random, Josh and I decided that Wednesday should be dubbed Wednesday Plans: The day people start to decide what’s going to happen from Thursday to Sunday.

Thursday is usually Beers & Cheers followed by debauchery in my calendar.

Fridays, I think that’s a stay in with sweat pants night.

Saturday is Nuit Blanche.

And Sunday is a write off.

What are your plans for the rest of the week?

TalentEgg.ca & Livedress.com; New Articles and an Update.

My second article, Recruiting 2.0: Social communities for resume building has been published over at TalentEgg.ca. This one is full of tips, and is pretty guidance counsellor heavy. Enjoy.

My first article with Livedress.com went live today. I did a profile on Queen St. jewellery boutique, EKO.

What’s also awesome this week is some news about the blog I started with Elena, Cheap ThrillCampus Intercept has agreed to publish an article nationally, once a month based around the idea of cheap thrills. They run a nationwide publication called Campus Life Magazine and it gets some pretty huge circulation. Although they’ve recently gone completely online, it’s still good news! First article should be up early May. I’ll also be doing a local Toronto article once a month. Thanks to Michelle for the tip off. We’re also going to be pitching a collaborative effort for the publication.

Am I a Writer?

I want to write books like her—not.

I’ve been filling up my plate as much I can these days. I really want my portfolio to be bursting at the seams. I figured that if I can volunteer my writing anywhere that will take me, it’ll give me good practice.

Work is going well, busy as always, but really well. I’ve started working on projects with more great people and it’s loads of fun. Big things also happening this coming week.

My second article with TalentEgg.ca should be up soon. I’ve contacted Campus Intercept—thanks Michelle—and I’m just waiting to hear back on when I can start writing. I’ve also been picked up by LiveDress.com; it’s a fashion site, and I’ll be writing profiles on independent boutiques around downtown Toronto. Most people have asked me why I’d write for an online fashion publication, but it’ll make it a challenge for me to have to write outside of my usual topics. It’s good practice.

Which brings me to my next question: Am I officially a writer? I mean, at work I write for a living. I’ll be writing for three publications soon, and LiveDress is giving me $9 an article. Yeah! $9! It’s better than nothing—I feel so bourgeoisie. Does all this make me a real writer? I don’t really know. I guess when other people start calling me a writer then I’ll feel like one. Whatever.

What Did You Have For Lunch Today?

Lindsay: "I'll have grass with a side of grass, please. Hold the fun, heavy on the boring!"

Sometimes at work we have a little bit of trouble on deciding what to have for lunch. I’ll be craving something totally different from another co-worker, and it becomes a back and forth brick wall debate until we just give up and go somewhere neither of us wanted to go to.

Some days can be good though; we’ll unanimously decide at 11 or 11:30 where we want to go.

Today was kinda sorta one of those days. I was feeling “Ginger” but then had a craving for meat pie. I ended up having a pretty good lunch though: hot chicken sandwich with peas, fries, and coleslaw.

What did you have?

(Lindsay, I’ll answer this one for you: A tree.)

Decisions: School and Work.
Actual photo of me writing, or whatever.

Actual photo of me writing, or whatever.

I just finished my first full day at the new office and with the new company. It’s crazy; the team is bigger now and we all have to work together. Synergy! I really hate that word. Whatever.

It was a long day but it was exciting none the less. I’ve left my reclusive hole of an office and sit with the rest of the team. That’s going to take a lot of getting use to. It was great to find my new desk fully settled with all my belongings this morning. The people who had moved our stuff even remembered my bottle of Advil and 12 post-it note pads. I also realized that I have two staplers, none of which work.

A few weeks ago I had to decide fairly quickly what my life would be like for the next year or so. If I wanted to join the rest of the team from LCI over at Venture, I’d have to sacrifice schooling during the day; a luxury afforded to me because of the nature of Lifecapture’s office culture. Venture is more rigid; for a corporation of it’s size and success, I’m going to have to prove myself to them in order to continue school. I mentioned previously that I’m setting up a schedule that will probably be the death of me; work 9-6, and summer school 7-9 for at least four days a week. I can handle it, I think.

I’m sitting idle for the next three months, and it’s kind of sad; I liked my creative writing class a lot, and I was doing really well. My prof. promised she’d mail me the remainder of my assignments marked and graded with comments. What’s great is that she said she would write a letter of recommendation if needed. I’m interested in going for a full creative writing degree. Who knows though, at the moment, I’m out of school and working hardcore. I’m also writing hardcore; I finished my one page (actually wrote two so MLEH!) of fiction for today, and now I’m writing here. Suck it.

Life At The Moment.
This is the pantry that the story is based on.

This is the pantry that the story is based on.

Things have been busy, and since I’ve come back from Cuba, there’s been little time to really relax. We’ve closed up our LCI office and on Monday we’ll be at our new desks at Venture. I’ve had to defer school again for work, but I’ve figured out an interesting summer school schedule that will probably be the death of me; however, I’ve pushed my writing into full swing to have something to show for.

Starting next week, I’ll be contributing articles for an online magazine. Last month I contributed to a Ryerson Newsletter (nothing fancy, but it was on marketing so I’m kind of excited to see it). I’ve set myself a goal of writing one page of fiction a day; and I’m not going to lie, but I’m doing pretty well there. At the moment I’m brainstorming a short story about a pantry that Lindsay will illustrate (woo!), polishing a short story that was going to be for my class, and plotting out another story that I’ve had foating around.

Things are going to busy.

I’m still going to publish a Cuba roundup, it’s just been sitting in my draft folder.

My New Pen: Pilot Hi-Tecpoint V7 Fine.

I want to test out this new pen Elena gave me! It’s a Pilot Hi-Tecpoint V7 in blue ink. It glides so well across the page, and it’s real ink; not just lousy ball point. This is kind of like the ink pen I have at work, just a little darker in shadow. This ink colour is less gay. OK, I think that’s enough obessing over this pen.

Back To School.

Wow, my eyes just speak "trashed".

Wow, my eyes just speak "trashed".

The shitstorm is over and we’re all back at school now. When one shitstorm ends, another begins; when two shitstorms collide, we have the perfect shitstorm. I’m in the middle of my typical Sunday homework smackdown, and I decided to excuse myself to spruce some things up around here. You might notice the change in theme. Sadly, wordpress doesn’t allow free customizations of their layouts, so I have to stick to what they have. Look at that grass, it’s kind of comforting, no?

I’m also waiting for that burnout. I’m scared I’m going to run into a block; forget what words are and how to use them. It’s mainly because I’m constantly writing. No, I’m not trying to sound like some pained artist, it’s what I have to do all day. I write for my job. I write for pleasure. I write for school. I’m just worried I’ll run out of words to use.

Today marks six months of Elena and I being together. Last night we stuffed our selves to the brim on Chinese food and wine, and then wasted the night away drinking martinis. It was good fun, just the two of us. The best thing in the world is stumbling around in a food coma; every step is so difficult and heavy. Oh, and Elena is the best thing in the world too. Sometimes. Cuba in two weeks!

Getaway: Mexico, Cuba?

I’m in dire need of some sun. I spent a good half hour today trying to find deals to trips down south, somewhere warmer. I’ve taken some time off in February, and hopefully Elena and I can get away for a while. It’s so goddamn cold outside, and I really just have this desire to sit. Do nothing. Drink. Eat. Sleep. Prices aren’t too bad, and I’m hoping she can get seven days off. A whole week! I’m still having trouble deciding where to go, but I think it just might be Mexico.
