Somalia – K’Naan.

I don’t know. It all just happened when one of his songs came on in my car. I was by myself and pretty floored by the melody and simplicity of it. Then I found the entire album and heard Solamia Somalia (Woah, I actually first typed “Solamia”). Man, why didn’t I know about him sooner? Weak.

Just to be an ass, I’m going to say he’s way better than k-os.

Happy Birthday kavisolo.

Three years old today! Crazy. This rounds out my entire blogging adventure at, like, almost eight years.

There are some awesome changes being rolled out in the next week or so. I’m re-working how this space can work better for me, as well as define new roles for interaction and engagement. Fun stuff–at least in my head it is.

On that note, listen to this song. It’s been stuck in my head for the better part of the month, and I just can’t help how awesome Tom Jones is in the chorus.

John Mayer – Battle Studies.

I just pushed my way through John Mayer’s latest release, Battle Studies twice. Overall thoughts:

  1. The album is less bluesy than his last effort
  2. He’s moved back to the earlier college/Hollister wearing stuff
  3. If anything, this album seems to be a sequel to Heavier Things
  4. Stand out tracks: Perfectly Lonely; Friends, Lovers or Nothing; and Mayer’s Cream inspired cover of Robert Johnson’s Crossroads
  5. The album has some great harmonies going on

I give it an overall 7/10.

Here you go, song of the week. This is what happens when you spend too much time in Paul’s car.

This song was so boss. That soundtrack was incredible.

I had to turn off from the Internet after I heard about this. I wasn’t ready for the onslaught of tributes that would pour in and flood my browser. Will we eulogize the guy who created the “Kanye Meme” when he dies one day? Sometimes, the Internet ruins everything.

She’s a Mystery to Me (Mystery Girl) – Roy Orbison.

I love finding songs that I didn’t realize I had on my iPod. I’m obsessed with this song. I just wish it wasn’t written by Bono and the Edge. Bah. Orbison’s voice is just incredible.

More songs to obsess over, here.

Songs That Stick.

Having a tune stuck in your head can be an amusing distraction or the most annoying thing ever. Sometimes you just zone out and hum away—repeating lines in a song that you remembered or heard. Other times you’re just plain frustrated that someone, somehow has managed to torture you with a tune that just won’t go away.

That’s what Songs That Stick is all about. Adding to the slew of single serving blogs that Elena and I publish, we’ve added another Tumblr destination for you to either hate or love. Our goal is to post every song that takes hostage of our minds in attempt to annoy you even further, or make you a fan of something you may not have heard before.

I’ve found that the song leaves my head once I post it to the site. I can listen to it once in its entirety and then move on. Enjoy.

Billy Talent “III” & Warner Music.

I won’t lie, when Billy Talent released their debut album years and years ago, I liked it quite a bit. I think we all did. Then we grew up and moved on, leaving a new legion of fourteen year olds to carry the torch. If you’re still a fan of the band, or just somehow stumbled upon this post from the caverns of the Internet, then this post is for you.

The band just released their latest self-titled album also known as III. The guys really need to get a little creative on the album naming. The first single, Rusted From the Rain isn’t bad—I’ll admit. It took a little while to grow on me, but you can hear the sounds of men growing older.

To coincide with the release of the new album, Warner Music has released a “widget” for fans to share. Seeking out the “ultimate fan”, users can sign up, share, and vote—the person with most votes, or “ultimate fandom” gets to win a bunch of prizes (I know, I’ve been about prizes a bit this week, but hey, free stuff!).

Along with the chance to win cool stuff, users are given access to a whole range of vids, tracks and interviews—especially in the studio stuff. It’s pretty interesting.

Check it out if you’re up for it.

*River Below is still a sick song.

Ugh, Michael Jackson.

Despite the accusations made upon the man, his music will stand as a testament of how amazing he was. Was. That is so creepy—if I was writing this last week, I would have been using is.

It’s seriously the saddest thing I’ve heard, and probably one of the most important passings of my time. I never cared much for Michael the alleged child molestor, and when you strip all that away, you see how amazing he was. His moves, his voice and his trademarks.

I still can’t believe it.

Susan Boyle.

A lot has been said about Susan Boyle in the past few weeks. Her voice really did shock people, me included, and I will admit that I’ve repeatedly watched her debut performance on Britain’s Got Talent.

I’ve been there before—those moments where you have to prove something to the scathing people around you, and when you one up them, they all of a sudden accept you as normal, as being okay to be associated with them. It’s a sad standard that society sets on people.

Her latest performance, one that has been widely anticipated, was just as stunning. But a part of me felt that the surprise factor, the jaw dropping realization of her talent was missing. 100 million hits on youtube and a whirlwind of press might have changed Susan Boyle, and a few weeks of being an Internet sensation is aeons in the real world.

It’s amazing what social media has done for this diamond in the rough, but let’s not forget American Idol’s Adam Lambert. A darling to the Internet, and the uncontested favourite of the series, came out as the loser.

There’s still a long way to go, and it’s utlimately the people of Britain that decide if Susan Boyle will reign supreme. My bet is on her, just because she could floor the house and the Queen. Let’s hope Internet fame hasn’t changed her.
